What we check

Seven problems we find most often in small business books. Each one costs money or time at tax time.

  1. Duplicate transactions

    The same bill, deposit or card charge entered twice, often after a bank feed reconnects.

  2. Payments not matched to invoices

    Money received that still shows the invoice as unpaid, so receivables look bigger than they are.

  3. Sales tax on the wrong code

    GST/HST, PST or QST charged or claimed at the wrong rate, which shows up when you file.

  4. Unreconciled bank and card accounts

    Months where the books and the statement do not agree.

  5. Uncategorised and suspense items

    Lines parked in "Ask my accountant" or uncategorised income and expense.

  6. Old open items

    Invoices and bills open for more than 90 days that were paid, written off or never real.

  7. Owner and personal spending

    Personal charges mixed into business expenses, and missing shareholder loan entries.
